Chapter 25 - The Road Home

The pit fiend's attack came with a lightning speed that belied its massive size. Although, by now, I’d come to expect that from demons. Its barbed tail whipped towards me, aiming to impale me where I stood.

I barely managed to dodge, feeling the wind of its passage caress my neck.

I activated both techniques once again, just as the demon's massive fist came crashing down. The impact of its blow sent shockwaves through the area that blew back small bits of rock. My skin flared with silver fire, searing the pit fiend's flesh. Fortunately, a great deal of the force was disbursed through the shell of mana that covered me, though the defensive measure broke.

I was going to have to find a way to strengthen it.

The pit fiend roared in pain and rage, its eyes blazing with hellfire. “So you want to play games, do you? You modron are all the same, thinking you’re so superior by staying out of the fray. You pride yourself on your independence and neutrality, but it's nothing more than a lie.”

I didn't waste my breath on a response. Instead, I channeled mana into my axe and swung with all my might. The blade bit deep into the demon's thigh, black ichor spraying from the wound. But even as I pulled the axe free, I watched in horror as the wound began to close.

Vitality Suppression was still running, so this was how quickly he healed even debuffed.

The pit fiend's laughter boomed across the battlefield. “Did you think it would be that easy, cousin?” Its wings unfurled, creating a gust of wind that nearly knocked me off my feet.

I stumbled back, narrowly avoiding another swipe of its deadly tail. I knew I needed to change tactics. Physical attacks weren't going to be enough. Drawing on the power that had awakened when I opened my throat meridian, I unleashed Voice of the Law.

“HALT!” I shouted.

The word carried more than just sound. It was infused with the very essence of order and structure, anathema to this realm of chaos. The particles in the air vibrated. It was like the realm itself was trying to obey my command, not just the pit fiend.

A burning red notification opened that I couldn’t ignore.

As for the pit fiend, he staggered. His movements—as least momentarily—became sluggish, but the reprieve was short-lived. His eyes narrowed, filled with a hatred that transcended mere physical violence.

“You dare bring the taint of Law to Avernus?” it snarled. “I will strip the flesh from your bones for this insult!”

His words were comical, like those of some monologuing villain—or maybe they weren’t. I remembered what N’bearn had said. Chaos reigns in hell. Perhaps there was more to this than I understood.

Had I just tried to inject the concept of one peak into another? Apparently, I had. I didn’t have time to puzzle out what that might mean.
